Féminine Pluriell Amsterdam is delighted to invite you to an evening with looted art expert Evelien Campfens.
Cases of looted art are highly complex and may not always be possible. What are fair and just solutions to solve these cases? How can decisions be made and what are the main challenges faced by institutions, governments but also private individuals? What is our responsibility?
Evelien will give us an insight into some of the most prominent cases of looted art – from Napoleonic losses, to colonial art objects to Nazi looted art. By identifying the challenges in each case, she will point out the difficulties surrounding solutions and argue for creative procedures.
Evelien Campfens currently holds a research position at the Grotius Center for International Law of Leiden University, where she is exploring the questions “Whose cultural objects? Justice and injustice in looted art matter” in her PhD thesis.
Between 2001 and 2016 she was General Secretary of the Dutch Restitutions Committee, where she was involved in setting up a forum for alternative dispute resolution for Holocaust-related art claims.
Before that Evelien worked as a lawyer at the Dutch Inspectorate of Cultural Heritage and Origins Unknown Agency for the Dutch Ministry of Eductaion, Culture and Science. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the German Lost Art Foundation (Deutsches Zentrum Kulturverluste), a lecturer at different institutes and universities
