Personalized Medicine in Luxembourg
– A personal view –
By Rudi Balling, Director LCSB

Almost everything around us seems to undergo a rapid change, mainly as a consequence of globalization and digitalization. Medicine and healthcare will not be spared by this and we already start to see the transformation taking place.
A major driving force has been the sequencing of the human genome, one of THE most personal attributes of each of us. Within the next few years we will be able to obtain our personal genome information for less than 1000 €. The question is: Will this make our life easier or not? It is becoming clear that each of us responds to food, drugs or life style in an individual fashion. What´s good for one might be poison for the other. How will this change our efforts to prevent or cure diseases and what does it mean for medical treatment and dietary recommendations?
Most drugs that a doctor prescribes are made for the average, 35 year old Caucasian male. What does this mean for the treatment of diseases of children, females or the young and old? We are flooded by “big data”, with smart devices, fit bits and social media everywhere. Are we loosing our privacy or gaining freedom? A personal reflection on personal medicine in the years to come.
